Designer Norio Terada has unveiled his latest fall collection, drawing inspiration from the renowned artist Jean Arp. This collection highlights Terada’s commitment to craftsmanship and innovative design, featuring hand-shaped ceramic pieces and a variety of repurposed materials.
Terada’s collection showcases intricate details achieved through high-quality materials and unique techniques. The designer created hundreds of white ceramic pieces, which he describes as a way for guests to connect with his work “with their eyes and skin.” This tactile approach reflects the organic forms and accidental beauty characteristic of Arp’s artistry.
Innovative Textiles and Collaborations
The collection includes a notable coat made from cashmere sourced in Bishu, a region in Aichi, Japan esteemed for its wool craftsmanship. Terada’s attention to detail is evident in this piece, which features a subtle sack back, allowing for both style and comfort.
Additionally, Terada repurposed leftover fibers from various materials, including wool, cashmere, cotton, linens, and alpaca. These remnants were transformed into a single yarn, which was then hand-knit into luxurious scarves and sweaters. Collaborating with textile artist Emiko Sato, Terada also introduced knit bags that complement the collection’s aesthetic.
Sculptural Elements Inspired by Arp
Incorporating elements from Arp’s architectural style, Terada has reimagined everyday staples, transforming them into sculptural forms. By integrating metal wiring into plackets and hems, he adds a unique structural integrity to traditional designs.
Terada also paid homage to Arp’s technique of collaging by creasing checked wool suiting and bonding it to another wool layer, creating a visually striking effect. This blend of artistic inspiration and meticulous craftsmanship underscores Terada’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of fashion design.
As the fashion world looks toward the upcoming season, Norio Terada’s fall collection stands out not only for its artistic roots but also for its innovative approach to sustainable design. The collection reflects a deep respect for materials and craftsmanship, inviting wearers to experience fashion in a new, more tactile way.
