NYPD Officers Bring Thanksgiving Joy to Brooklyn Families in Need

On November 22, 2023, officers from the New York Police Department (NYPD) spread Thanksgiving cheer to families in need during a food drive at the 90th Precinct in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The event was the first annual food drive organized by various NYPD groups, including the Detectives Endowment Association, the Sergeants Benevolent Association, and the NYPD’s Hispanic Society. Officers distributed a total of 400 turkeys to local residents, emphasizing their commitment to community support.

“This initiative demonstrates our Detectives’ dedication to the communities they serve and their desire to give back,” said Scott Munro, President of the Detectives Endowment Association. He noted the importance of supporting those struggling during challenging times, stating, “There are a lot of people in need right now and we want to ease that burden for them.”

The sentiment of unity was echoed by Barbara Williams, a retired detective and NYPD Chaplain. She expressed that events like this help “bridge the gap between community and us.” Williams added, “We are all one family. We want these people to know we go through the same struggles that they go through despite us wearing a blue uniform.”

As families lined up to receive their turkeys, the atmosphere was filled with gratitude and hope. Recipients shared their personal stories, highlighting the significance of the donations. Shari Owens, who received a turkey, reflected on her recent health struggles, saying, “This time last year I had two heart attacks and I flatlined twice while at the hospital. I am thankful for the gift of life this year.” Owens also mentioned her plans to share her turkey with her niece, reinforcing the spirit of giving during the holiday season.

Another recipient, Carlos DeJesus, shared his own feelings of thankfulness, stating, “Thanksgiving is a lot about giving back and being thankful.” He expressed gratitude for his family’s well-being, noting, “My wife beat cancer and my daughter lived through a bad car accident. I am thankful for life and health. If a turkey brings us together, that’s all I can ask for.”

The event not only provided essential food items but also fostered a sense of community connection. Officers and residents alike participated in the spirit of the season, reinforcing the idea that kindness and support can make a significant difference in people’s lives.

As the holiday approaches, initiatives like this remind us of the importance of community, compassion, and togetherness. The NYPD’s commitment to serving and uplifting local families showcases the positive impact law enforcement can have beyond their traditional roles.
