In a remarkable display of community solidarity, nonprofits in Oakland, California, have partnered with at-risk youth to provide Thanksgiving meals for 900 families in need. The initiative, led by the East Oakland Bridges Coalition, aims to ensure that local families can celebrate the holiday with a festive meal, fostering a sense of hope and togetherness.
Volunteers, including many young individuals from challenging backgrounds, have come together to assemble boxes filled with traditional Thanksgiving fare. This effort not only addresses food insecurity but also allows participants to contribute positively to their community. “Being able to help other people makes my inner child heal because I wasn’t able to get that help when I was younger,” stated Crystal Zavala, a high school student and volunteer.
The coalition’s mission extends beyond providing meals; it seeks to reshape perceptions of Oakland. “I just want Oakland to be better than what others look at it as. It’s not just always robberies, stealing, killing,” expressed Zamiah Nobles, a 25-year-old who has turned her life around after serving time in prison. Her words reflect a shared sentiment among the youth involved in this initiative, many of whom are striving to overcome their pasts.
The program also highlights the importance of mentorship and guidance. Kenneth McClendon, a 15-year-old volunteer, shared his journey of transformation, crediting the support he received from organizations run by formerly incarcerated individuals. “I was one of the ones who helped destroy and destruct Oakland. My thing is to give back and help repair it,” remarked Charles Reed, the founder of Lifers Leaving a Legacy.
For many young people like Ziri Wilson, CEO of Lulu’s House, helping others is foundational to their own healing journey. “It’s hard out here for these youngsters because nobody believes in them. But we do,” he stated, emphasizing the transformative power of community support.
The Thanksgiving food drive is set to culminate on November 25, 2023, when the coalition will distribute the prepared boxes to families across Oakland. This initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also lays the groundwork for future support, with plans to organize similar efforts for Christmas.
The collaboration between nonprofits and local youth underscores a critical message: community involvement can spark change and foster a sense of belonging. The young volunteers are finding purpose and pride in their contributions, which they describe as a gift to themselves. As they continue to nourish their community, they also nurture their own growth and aspirations.
