Purdue’s Braden Smith Earns Unanimous Preseason All-American Honor

Braden Smith, a standout guard for Purdue University, has been named a unanimous preseason All-American, a recognition that underscores his exceptional performance in college basketball. This accolade follows a remarkable season where Smith played a pivotal role in leading the Boilermakers to the national championship game in 2024. Despite having the opportunity to enter the NBA draft, Smith chose to return for another season under the guidance of head coach Matt Painter, aiming for a national title.

The announcement came as part of the Associated Press preseason All-America team, which was released on Monday. Smith received all 57 votes from a panel of media members. His honor coincides with Purdue being ranked No. 1 in the AP Top 25 for the first time in history. This recognition places him alongside other prominent players, including Texas Tech’s JT Toppin, who received 52 votes, Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg with 30 votes, BYU’s freshman AJ Dybantsa with 22 votes, and Florida forward Alex Condon with 16 votes.

Smith’s Path to Success

Reflecting on his recognition, Smith stated, “That’s just how Purdue has always been, how every player has always been. Coach Painter recruits players with similar mindsets, and we always want to be part of a program and culture like this.” Since his freshman year in the 2022-23 season, Smith has consistently demonstrated his talent on the court. He averaged 12 points, 7.5 assists, 5.8 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game during the 2024 championship run, also setting a school record for minutes played.

His performance peaked in his junior season, making him the first player in NCAA history to record at least 550 points, 300 assists, 150 rebounds, and 75 steals in a single season. Smith’s averages of 15.8 points, 8.7 assists, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.2 steals helped propel Purdue to the Sweet 16.

Rising Stars in College Basketball

The preseason All-American team also highlighted other emerging talents. Toppin had a stellar first year at Texas Tech after transferring from New Mexico. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 18.2 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks, leading the Red Raiders to the Elite Eight. Toppin was a second-team AP All-American and the Big 12 player of the year before deciding to return to Texas Tech, which is currently ranked No. 10 in the AP preseason poll.

Lendeborg, who previously played for UAB, also made headlines after transferring to Michigan. He had a successful stint, helping the Blazers reach the 2024 NCAA Tournament. After exploring NBA opportunities, the 6-foot-9 forward opted to remain in college, seeking a chance to compete for a Final Four appearance. His addition has bolstered Michigan’s prospects, contributing to their No. 7 preseason ranking.

Meanwhile, BYU is experiencing heightened expectations following the acquisition of Dybantsa, the nation’s top recruit. The 6-foot-9 forward chose to join the Cougars after a successful season under coach Kevin Young, where they reached the Sweet 16. Dybantsa is known for his scoring ability and defensive prowess, making him a potential candidate for the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft.

Condon, who initially declared for the NBA draft after Florida’s national championship victory last season, has returned to the Gators. The 6-foot-11 Australian averaged 10.6 points and 7.5 rebounds per game, leading the team with 49 blocked shots. His contributions were vital in the national title game against Houston, where he recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Condon will aim to lead Florida to consecutive championships, as they currently hold a No. 3 ranking in the AP preseason poll.

With the college basketball season approaching, the performances of these athletes, including Smith’s leadership at Purdue, will be closely watched as fans anticipate an exciting year ahead.
