Edith Furst Howell, a beloved figure in her community and a passionate interior designer, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025, at the age of 97. A lifelong resident of Chicago, she was known for her deep commitment to family, her vibrant design work, and her active involvement in local affairs.
Born on March 2, 1928, Edith was the daughter of William H. Furst and Edith E. Furst. She grew up in a family that valued education and community service, which shaped her own pursuits throughout her life. Surviving her are two daughters, Elizabeth (Ian) MacCallum of New Vernon, New Jersey, and Suzanne (Christopher) Smythe of Shaker Heights, Ohio. She also leaves behind four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and her brother William C. Furst (Virginia) of Glencoe, Illinois.
A Legacy of Education and Community Engagement
Edith’s educational journey began at New Trier High School, followed by studies at Vassar College and Northwestern University. It was at Harris Trust and Savings Bank where she met her husband, William Warren Howell, whom she married in 1953. Together, they raised their family in Winnetka, Illinois, where they became actively involved in preserving the village’s unique character.
Throughout her life, Edith demonstrated a passion for interior design, ultimately founding her own successful design business. Her keen eye for aesthetics made a lasting impact on the homes she worked on, and her creativity extended beyond design into her love for gardening and flower arranging. She was a proud member of both the Garden Club of Winnetka and the Green Meadows Garden Club, where she shared her passion for horticulture with fellow enthusiasts.
Celebrating a Life Well-Lived
The family plans to hold a private celebration of Edith’s life at a later date. In honor of her memory, they invite friends and loved ones to consider making memorial donations to Christ Church, specifically designated for the Benevolence Fund.
