Saratoga County Sheriff Michael Zurlo Honored at Farewell Ceremony

SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. — An official walkout ceremony was held for Sheriff Michael Zurlo on November 1, 2023, marking the end of his remarkable 48-year career in law enforcement, including 12 years as sheriff of Saratoga County. The event took place at the Paul E. Lent Public Safety Facility in Ballston Spa, where family, friends, and colleagues gathered to celebrate his legacy and contributions to the community.

Reflecting on his lengthy tenure in law enforcement, Zurlo emphasized the importance of the relationships he built with both colleagues and residents. “I love the passion. I love the people I work with. I love the residents of Saratoga County,” he stated. Starting his career in Mechanicville, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as sheriff, adding, “The last 12 years have been phenomenal.”

The ceremony drew law enforcement officials, elected representatives, and community members, all braving inclement weather to honor Zurlo’s service. He noted the significance of the crowd, saying, “It’s truly been my honor to do the best job I can do as sheriff.” Zurlo’s impact extended beyond his immediate department, fostering connections across surrounding counties.

During the event, Zurlo’s son, Andrew Zurlo, delivered a heartfelt tribute. He praised his father’s integrity and dedication, stating, “You taught us that heroes live in quiet strength, consistency, and always putting family first. Those lessons shaped who we are today more than you’ll ever know.”

Zurlo expressed his deep appreciation for his family’s support throughout his career. He acknowledged the sacrifices they made, particularly during holidays when he was called to duty. “I’ve missed Christmases… but I’m going to be able to enjoy time” with his family moving forward, he said.

As part of the ceremony, Zurlo received several departmental honors, including the Honorable Discharge Award, which recognizes individuals who have served their community honorably. Undersheriff Jeff Brown, who will succeed Zurlo, remarked that the outgoing sheriff epitomized what a county sheriff should be.

In his final address as sheriff, Zurlo reflected on his tenure with gratitude and humility. “Today marks the end of an incredible 12-year journey as the Sheriff of Saratoga County,” he said. “I take this final walk with a full and grateful heart, humbled by the support I received.” He expressed confidence in his successor, stating, “I could not think of a better person to succeed me.”

Looking ahead, Zurlo expressed excitement about spending more time with his family, particularly his seven-month-old granddaughter, Lily. He also mentioned plans to travel with his wife and enjoy a well-deserved respite after decades of dedicated service.

As he concluded the ceremony, Zurlo reassured the community of his commitment during his time in office. “I can tell them I did my job 150%. I worked hard, seven days a week, 365 days a year, 24/7 to give them the best protection that they can have,” he stated.

The Saratogian newspaper plans to publish a detailed reflection on Zurlo’s career and motivations on December 24, 2023, providing further insight into the legacy of this dedicated law enforcement officer.
