Senator Tuberville Honors Colonel Downing as January Veteran

U.S. Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has recognized Colonel Patrick Downing of Mobile as the January “Veteran of the Month” in a recent video tribute. This honor celebrates Downing’s distinguished military career and his contributions to the community following his retirement.

Colonel Downing’s Military Journey

Colonel Downing, a Mobile native, dedicated 36 years to military service. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at the young age of 17, inspired by his father, a World War II Marine. In 1961, he joined the Special Forces, where he served for three decades, including two tours in Vietnam.

After marrying his high school sweetheart, Patricia, at a chapel in Fort Bragg, Downing faced significant challenges upon deployment. His unit was met with mortar attacks shortly after arriving in Vietnam, and they were informed of a bounty placed on them simply for being there. Despite these dangers, Downing remained committed to his mission.

Returning Home and Community Contributions

Upon retiring in 1996, Downing and his wife decided to return to Alabama after 19 relocations throughout his military career. They settled in Mobile, where Downing turned his passion for education into a lifelong commitment to his community. He worked at the University of South Alabama for over 20 years, including serving as the director of one of the university’s satellite campuses for 15 years, before concluding his career as the director of transportation for the main and Springhill campuses.

Now enjoying family life, Downing and Patricia are proud grandparents of seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Senator Tuberville expressed gratitude for Downing’s dedication, stating, “After traveling far and wide to protect our freedoms, I am glad Pat planted his roots down in Mobile.”

As part of the ongoing initiative, constituents are invited to nominate veterans from Alabama for future recognition. Nominations for the “Veteran of the Month” series can be submitted to Senator Tuberville’s office via email at [email protected].

This monthly recognition aims to honor veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities, reflecting the values of service and patriotism.
