Shaker Heights Launches Initiative to Combat Food Insecurity

In response to the federal government shutdown and the subsequent reduction of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, the city of Shaker Heights, Ohio, has initiated a matching donation campaign to support local food assistance efforts. The city will match contributions made to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland up to $10,000 as part of its “Shaker Shares: Neighbors Helping Neighbors” program. This initiative will remain open for donations until November 30, 2023.

Local officials announced the effort on Friday, emphasizing the urgent need for community support as the demand for food assistance rises. The Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center has reported an increase in the number of households served, rising from an average of 84 households per month in the first nine months of the year to 133 households in October alone. This surge correlates with the suspension of federal food benefits, which has left many families struggling to meet their nutritional needs.

Community Response and Upcoming Food Distributions

Mayor David Weiss expressed gratitude for the community’s willingness to support its most vulnerable members. “In true Shaker spirit, many residents have asked what they can do to assist those who rely on federal food benefits,” he stated. “This effort can make a real difference. I urge Shaker residents — who are able — to make a donation to the Hunger Network to help our neighbors during this difficult time.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, the community has several food distribution events planned, scheduled for November 17, 19, 24, and 26. These distributions will take place at the Shaker Heights Community Church, located at 20120 Lomond Blvd., and aim to provide additional support to families in need during the holiday season.

In addition to the matching donation initiative, the city has compiled a list of resources available for residents facing food insecurity. This includes:

  • Our Lady of Peace Church – Distributes pre-packed food bags on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church office, located at 12503 Buckingham Ave., Cleveland.

The city plans to update this list with additional resources as they become available, further ensuring that residents have access to the support they need during this challenging time. The Shaker Heights initiative reflects a strong commitment to community solidarity in addressing food insecurity and supporting local families.
