Residents across Long Island are expressing growing frustration as many sidewalks next to bus stops remain unplowed following a recent snowstorm on March 10, 2024. Reports indicate that the situation poses safety hazards for pedestrians, particularly in areas where snowdrifts have accumulated around key transit points.
Safety Concerns at Bus Stops
In Bay Shore, the sidewalk adjacent to a bus stop on Main Street, near CVS at 480 Montauk Highway, is completely covered in snow. Local resident Ashley Slide voiced her concerns, stating, “I’m scared I’m going to slip and fall. That is a safety hazard.” Many individuals have resorted to walking in the street to access bus stops, heightening the risk of accidents.
Another resident, Charlie Gordon, highlighted the challenges faced by vulnerable groups, saying, “I worry about the people who use wheelchairs.” The lack of accessibility is particularly alarming as local authorities grapple with the aftermath of the storm.
Responsibility for Snow Removal
In response to the complaints, crews were observed shoveling snow just hours after a local news outlet contacted the mall for assistance. The Town of Oyster Bay clarified that property owners are responsible for maintaining sidewalks adjacent to their properties. A spokesperson for the mall indicated that snow removal efforts were made throughout the storm, but subsequent plowing by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) has caused the sidewalks to become buried again.
According to a state DOT spokesperson, their responsibility extends to plowing state highways, while local municipalities can assign the obligation for sidewalk maintenance to property owners. This division of responsibility has led to confusion and frustration among residents who rely on public transport.
As the snow continues to linger in these critical areas, community members are calling for immediate action to ensure safety and accessibility for all. Local authorities and businesses face pressure to address these concerns promptly, particularly as the weather continues to fluctuate in the coming weeks.
