Residents of Gatlinburg can feel more assured about their safety following a comprehensive Emergency Operations Center drill conducted on October 29, 2023. This full-scale exercise was designed to assess the city’s preparedness for a severe wildland fire scenario, simulating a nighttime incident fueled by high winds and multiple structure fires. The drill involved all 15 city departments, emphasizing a coordinated response to potential emergencies.
Led by Gatlinburg’s Safety Director Jason Owens, the exercise aimed to rigorously test communication protocols and response strategies. “The safety and security of Gatlinburg’s citizens and visitors remain the City’s highest priority,” stated City Manager Greg Patterson. This drill served as a practical application of that commitment, allowing officials to navigate through realistic emergency challenges.
During the drill, department heads were placed in simulated situations requiring them to manage evacuations and coordinate critical resources. Patterson underscored the significance of collaboration, explaining that such drills are vital for ensuring effective communication and streamlined operations. “Conducting a citywide drill like this allows our departments to collaborate, share critical information, and streamline efforts to reduce potential risks,” he added.
Strengthening Emergency Communication Systems
The exercise also provided an opportunity to evaluate the city’s emergency communication systems. Technologies assessed included the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System notifications, CodeRED alerts, and the local Emergency Radio. The presence of 10 outdoor emergency alert sirens adds an audible layer of instructions for residents and visitors during crises, ensuring that vital information is disseminated promptly.
Patterson emphasized that these drills are essential for community safety. “They help ensure that when a real emergency occurs, our team is prepared to respond swiftly and effectively to protect our community,” he said. Engaging the community is a key aspect of this preparedness initiative. Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate actively in safety measures, including signing up for CodeRED emergency alerts through the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency website.
This proactive approach not only involves city personnel but also invites the public to be part of the emergency response framework. By fostering a culture of preparedness, Gatlinburg aims to create a finely tuned response mechanism capable of addressing various emergencies beyond wildfires, ensuring the safety and security of its community.
