Genesee County Sheriff’s Office Waives PPO Fees for Victims
The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office has introduced a significant initiative to support domestic violence victims by eliminating the service fees for personal protection orders (PPOs) for those in financial distress. This change, announced by Sheriff Chris Swanson, aims to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder individuals seeking safety from abusive situations.
Starting immediately, the Sheriff’s Office will cover the costs associated with serving PPOs for individuals who cannot afford the fees. “The cost to have a PPO served should never be a barrier to keeping a person safe from a domestic situation,” Swanson stated. This proactive measure comes as a response to the ongoing legislative efforts aimed at abolishing such fees statewide, which can often take time to enact.
Individuals in need of this service can visit the Sheriff’s Office located on South Saginaw Street to speak directly with a deputy or detective who will assist in serving the order. In his announcement, Sheriff Swanson emphasized, “Effective immediately, if you have a PPO that’s been authorized by the court and you do not have the financial means to pay for that service, you just can’t afford it, do not let that stop you,” according to CBS News Detroit.
State Budget Support for Domestic Violence Services
This initiative aligns with recent developments at the state level, including a budget signed by Governor Gretchen Whitmer, which allocates $162.3 million for crime victim services. This funding specifically targets domestic violence prevention and support for survivors, highlighting a broader commitment to addressing these critical issues.
Sheriff Swanson has positioned this effort as not just an immediate response but also as a potential model for statewide reform. In a message shared via social media, he reassured victims, stating, “We will protect you and we won’t let finances be a barrier,” as documented by ABC12.
For those interested in obtaining a PPO in Genesee County, the Sheriff’s Office provides resources and information on the process. In urgent situations, victims are encouraged to call emergency services at 911 or contact the YWCA crisis line, which operates 24/7 to offer immediate assistance.
The Sheriff’s initiative marks a pivotal step in supporting those affected by domestic violence, ensuring that safety and protection are accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstances.
