Georgia’s Senate Majority Leader, Jason Anavitarte, has proposed the establishment of the Sgt Major John Barry Dean Memorial Intersection at the crossroads of State Route 92 and Cedarcrest Road in Paulding County. This initiative aims to honor the extensive military and educational contributions of Sgt Major Dean, who dedicated nearly four decades to military service and more than six years to local education.
The decision to name the intersection after Dean is a reflection of his distinguished career. According to a statement released by the Senate Press, Dean’s bravery in service to the nation and his dedication to public education have been widely recognized. His legacy encompasses his roles as a servicemember and an educator, which have profoundly impacted the community.
In expressing his admiration for Dean, Rep. Joseph Gullett stated, “John Dean was the kind of leader whose impact endures long after he’s gone. This intersection stands as a simple but powerful reminder of his lifelong service to others.” Dean enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1968 and served as an avionics technician before transitioning into local public service. He passed away at the age of 75.
The proposed memorial intersection serves to commemorate Dean’s multifaceted contributions, particularly his work with the Paulding County School Board, where he began serving in 2018. Senator Anavitarte’s initiative reflects a broader commitment within the community to honor those who have served both in military capacities and in educational roles.
The establishment of the memorial intersection not only acknowledges Dean’s service but also emphasizes the value placed on public service within Paulding County. Local officials and residents alike see this tribute as a fitting recognition of a leader who left a lasting mark on both the military and educational landscapes. The proposal is currently under consideration and, if approved, would serve as a lasting tribute to Dean’s legacy for generations to come.
