The Selma community is grieving the loss of Roger Dainwood Butler, a well-respected businessman and owner of Roger Butler Jewelers, who passed away on January 13, 2026, just days after celebrating his 88th birthday. Butler was a significant figure in Selma’s business landscape for over four decades, known for his integrity and dedicated service to the community.
Born with a passion for communication, Butler graduated from the University of Alabama with a degree in communications. His early career included producing a radio show in high school and working as a page at ABC studios in New York during a college summer break. His journey continued as he joined the Army Signal Corps, where he produced training films in New York City and served in Paris during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.
After receiving an honorary discharge in 1962, Butler returned to Selma with his wife, Doris Butler. He briefly worked at local radio stations, WRWJ and WHBB, before an unexpected opportunity led him to manage a jewelry store. Embracing this new path, he and Doris purchased the business in 1964 and renamed it Roger Butler Jewelers.
Under Butler’s leadership, the store became a cornerstone of downtown Selma, employing up to 25 people by the time he retired in 2003. His commitment to the community extended beyond business; he held leadership roles in various organizations including the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and United Way. His influence also reached the Salvation Army Advisory Board and the board of the Selma Branch of AmSouth Bank.
Butler’s accolades include serving as president of the Alabama Jewelers Association and receiving a Lifetime Membership Award, a highlight of his career. Reflecting on the honor, Butler expressed deep appreciation, recalling, “I really was just absolutely thrilled to death,” as he recognized the achievements of earlier recipients.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Butler was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Doris, their daughter, Doris, and grandson, Andrew Truax. The community gathered to celebrate his life during a funeral service held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on January 16.
Roger Butler’s legacy of service and dedication to Selma will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His contributions to the community and the business world will continue to inspire future generations.
