Senator Warnock Welcomes Monks on 2,300-Mile Peace Walk

U.S. Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock (D-GA) welcomed nearly two dozen Buddhist monks in Decatur, Georgia, last week as they paused in their remarkable 2,300-mile journey from Texas to Washington, D.C.. This walk aims to promote peace and unity across the nation. During the monks’ visit, Senator Warnock praised their commitment to translating faith into action.

In his remarks, Senator Warnock drew parallels between the monks’ mission and the teachings of Martin Luther King, Jr., who famously advocated for active engagement in the pursuit of justice. “These monks understand, as did Georgia’s greatest son, Martin Luther King, Jr., that it’s not simply enough to pray for peace with our lips,” he stated. “We must pray with our legs. We have to put our faith into action.”

As part of his address, Senator Warnock acknowledged the challenges faced by the monks on their journey. He specifically mentioned the plight of Venerable Phra-Ajarnh Maha Dam Phommasan, a Georgia resident who suffered a serious accident, resulting in the amputation of his leg. “Let us not forget that this journey has not been easy,” Warnock said. “They are all in, and we are especially keeping him in our prayers while he recovers at home in Snellville.”

Senator Warnock, who has served as Senior Pastor of the historic Ebenezer Baptist Church since 2005, emphasized that his ministry extends beyond the church walls. He actively supports community organizing and protests as forms of prayer and advocacy. The church, once led by Dr. King, embodies a tradition of social justice and community service that Warnock passionately upholds.

The monks’ long-distance pilgrimage reflects a growing movement of individuals committed to advocating for peace and reconciliation. Their journey underscores the importance of unity in a time of division. By walking such a significant distance, they not only raise awareness but also inspire others to engage in meaningful dialogue and activism.

This encounter in Decatur serves as a reminder of the power of faith and action in addressing societal challenges. Senator Warnock’s support for the monks highlights the role of leaders in fostering a culture of peace and understanding, encouraging communities to come together in pursuit of common goals.
