Cathy McCurdy, a beloved community leader in Hermosa Beach, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on December 3, 2025. She was 74 years old. The cause of death was attributed to complications from diabetes, which she had battled for several years.
Born in Queens, New York, to Raymond and Erma “Susie” Shea, Cathy spent her formative years in Hermosa Beach. She graduated from Redondo Union High School in the class of 1969 and later married Richard H. “Dick” McCurdy in 1978. Together, they not only contributed to the family business at Shea Company but also left an indelible mark on their community through extensive volunteer work.
Cathy McCurdy’s influence extended far beyond her business endeavors. She served on the Hermosa Beach School Board and dedicated many years to the Hermosa Valley School. Her commitment to education was evident in her founding of the Kiwanis Builders Club at the school, which aimed to foster leadership and community service among students. Additionally, she was an active supporter of the Hermosa Beach Education Foundation and the Sister City Association, demonstrating her passion for community and educational initiatives.
For nearly a decade, Cathy represented Hermosa Beach on the Los Angeles County Beach Commission, where she advocated for beach preservation and community welfare. Her dedication to the city was recognized in 1998 when she was honored as the Hermosa Beach Woman of the Year, a testament to her unwavering service and commitment.
Cathy was also deeply involved with the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach, where both she and Dick held various leadership positions, including President. Their work with the club exemplified their shared dedication to community service and engagement.
A funeral service will be held on February 21, 2026, at 11 a.m. at St. Cross Episcopal Church, located at 1818 Monterey Blvd., Hermosa Beach. This will be followed by a celebration of life at Kiwanis Hall, situated at 2515 Valley Dr., Hermosa Beach, where friends, family, and community members will gather to honor her legacy.
Cathy McCurdy will be remembered not only for her contributions to the community but also for her warmth and kindness. Her impact on the lives of many in Hermosa Beach will be felt for years to come.
