Community Mourns the Loss of Judith Ann Ernst, 81

Judith Ann Ernst, a respected educator and beloved member of the Redondo Beach community, passed away unexpectedly at her home on October 4, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on December 20, 1943, in Manhattan Beach, California, Judith, known affectionately as Judy, dedicated her life to education and her family.

Judy’s journey in education began with her graduation from Mira Costa High School in 1961. She later attended UCLA, where her passion for learning flourished. In a remarkable achievement for a woman in business during that era, she founded the Montessori School of Manhattan Beach in 1968 at the age of 24. Starting with just twelve students, including her three children, Judy created a nurturing environment where curiosity and kindness could thrive. Her pioneering spirit and commitment to the Montessori method inspired countless families in the community.

Legacy of Adventure and Style

Known for her adventurous spirit, Judy engaged in various activities that reflected her zest for life. She enjoyed free-diving alongside her husband, John Ernst, and was known for her bold fashion choices. Judy’s elegant and classic style made her a prominent figure in social settings, as she was always impeccably dressed.

Tennis was another significant part of Judy’s life. She frequently participated in tournaments with John and their son Jeff. Her love for the sport remained strong throughout her life, as she continued to play even in her later years. Friends and family will remember her not only for her passion for education but also for her energy, style, and adventurous nature.

Judy is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, John, and her children, Jeff, Greg, Lynn, Darlyn, and Leila. She also leaves behind eleven grandchildren who will carry forward her legacy of love and learning. Judy was preceded in death by her parents, Ardith and Herral Jones, as well as her daughter Nadine, a grandson, and a great-grandson.
