Auburn Players Share Coaching Aspirations Ahead of Decision

Auburn University football players expressed their desires for the team’s next head coach following a disappointing 27-20 loss to Alabama in the Iron Bowl. As the Tigers prepare for a significant decision on their coaching future, players have emphasized the qualities they seek in a leader.

Senior offensive lineman Jeremiah Wright articulated the need for a coach who values players beyond the game. “I kind of just look at it like someone that loves their players. That’s not all about football. Someone that’s just going to get to know each and every one of their players and bond with them,” Wright said after the game. He stressed the importance of restoring Auburn’s football tradition, stating, “Just someone who’s going to go all out and do whatever to help this university get back to where it’s supposed to be.”

Linebacker Xavier Atkins showed strong support for DJ Durkin, who has served as the interim head coach. “It would mean a lot to me. As y’all see, the locker room, the team, we love Durk, a great man, great leader. He brings that energy for the team,” Atkins remarked. He noted that Durkin has instilled confidence in the players since taking over, adding, “We’re going to be the aggressor. We’re going to come out swinging.”

While many players shared their thoughts, some chose to remain tight-lipped about the coaching vacancy. Ashton Daniels emphasized trust in the administration, indicating, “We trust our administration. We’ll obviously figure that out tomorrow. But we trust our administration to find the right hire for us.” Edge rusher Keyron Crawford added a light-hearted note, smiling as he deferred the question to the administration, indicating, “That’s a question for the administration.”

The decision regarding Auburn’s next head coach is expected to be announced on Sunday morning, marking a pivotal moment for the program as it seeks to turn the page with its 29th head coach in history. The anticipation surrounding this announcement underscores the urgency felt by both players and fans alike.

As the Auburn community awaits the outcome, the focus remains on finding a leader who can unite the team and reignite its competitive spirit. The players’ insights reflect a collective desire for a coach who not only prioritizes performance on the field but also fosters a strong, supportive environment for the athletes.
