Denny Hamlin Supports Jim Pohlman’s Role in Boosting Kyle Busch and RCR

Denny Hamlin has expressed his support for Richard Childress Racing’s decision to hire veteran crew chief Jim Pohlman, who has yet to make his mark in the NASCAR Cup Series’ Next Gen era. Hamlin believes that Pohlman’s expertise could provide the vital spark that Kyle Busch needs to enhance his performance with RCR.
On his recent podcast, Hamlin discussed the potential impact of Pohlman, stating that he might represent “the best option they could get.” He highlighted the trend of crew chiefs with no Cup experience being promoted, referencing Charles Denike’s move from the #19 truck to the #23 car at 23XI Racing last year. Hamlin noted that after three seasons of racing with the Next Gen cars, he sees little advantage for established teams over newcomers.
Hamlin appreciates that RCR is looking beyond internal promotions, suggesting that a fresh perspective could lead to significant improvements. He remarked, “Maybe he can come up with something to where why aren’t you guys looking at Y versus X? Hopefully, it gets Kyle Busch the performance jump that he’s looking for.”
Pohlman brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He recently guided Justin Allgaier at JR Motorsports to victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship at Phoenix. Since taking the helm of the No. 7 team in 2023, he has transformed it into a formidable contender. His previous involvement with RCR’s research and development program also plays a crucial role, as he contributed to the design of the Cup car that Busch has struggled to master.
Kyle Busch has consistently praised the quality of equipment at JR Motorsports but acknowledges that Pohlman’s leadership has elevated the team’s performance. His optimism about Pohlman’s return to RCR suggests that this change could revitalize not just the No. 8 team, but the entire organization.
As RCR looks to improve its standings in the competitive NASCAR landscape, the hiring of Jim Pohlman stands out as a strategic move. With Hamlin’s endorsement and Pohlman’s proven track record, the team may find the momentum it has been seeking as they head into the upcoming races.
