Denver Broncos Evaluate Veteran TE Marcedes Lewis During Workout

The Denver Broncos held a workout for veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The 41-year-old Lewis arrived at Broncos Park following the team’s unsuccessful waiver claims for tight ends Brendan Bates and Ben Sims, who were awarded to the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings, respectively.

Lewis, selected 28th overall in the 2006 NFL Draft, boasts an extensive and successful career in the National Football League (NFL). He holds the all-time record for most career appearances by a tight end, having played for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Bears. Over his career, Lewis has accumulated 437 receptions, 5,115 yards, and 40 touchdowns. A Pro Bowler in 2010, he is renowned for his blocking abilities, making him one of the top tight ends in the league, even if not the most prolific in receiving.

Lewis made four starts for the Bears last season and has demonstrated remarkable durability, missing only one game in the past eight seasons. His extensive experience could be valuable for the Broncos, who are currently assessing their tight end depth due to injuries.

The Broncos are facing a challenging situation with injuries impacting their roster. Tight ends Lucas Krull and Nate Adkins are both expected to be sidelined for an extended period. Krull recently underwent foot surgery, which will likely keep him out for around eight weeks, while Adkins is recovering from a knee injury sustained during the recent game against the Dallas Cowboys.

As part of their roster adjustments, the Broncos released quarterback Sam Ehlinger from the active roster, along with Garrett Nelson and Samori Toure from the practice squad. It is anticipated that inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw will fill Ehlinger’s position upon his return from a one-game suspension.

With the tight end position now requiring additional support, Lewis’s tryout with the Broncos could lead to a contract, should the visit prove successful. The Broncos currently have Caleb Lohner and Patrick Murtagh on their practice squad, but securing a veteran presence like Lewis may be crucial as the team navigates its injury challenges.

Looking ahead to the November 4 NFL trade deadline, reports indicate that the Broncos are exploring options in the tight end market. There has also been speculation, although unconfirmed, regarding their interest in acquiring TJ Hockenson from the Vikings.

The ongoing developments highlight the Broncos’ commitment to strengthening their roster during this critical part of the season. As the team evaluates its options, the potential addition of Marcedes Lewis could provide both leadership and depth at the tight end position.
