Detry and Rahm Share LIV Golf Lead After Dramatic Escape

In a remarkable turn of events, Thomas Detry is tied for the lead at the LIV Golf tournament in Hong Kong, thanks to the efforts of fellow competitor Jon Rahm. Detry’s impressive round of 66 leaves him in contention alongside Rahm, who shot 65, and Harold Varner III, who carded a 63. Their journey to the tournament took an unexpected twist when they were stranded in the United Arab Emirates due to regional tensions.

The situation escalated earlier this week as Israeli and U.S. attacks on Iran led to widespread flight cancellations across the Middle East. This affected several players, including Detry and seven others, who were in Dubai either residing there or waiting between LIV events. “If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I’d be there,” Detry remarked, reflecting on Rahm’s critical role in their safe passage to Hong Kong.

Chartered Flight to Safety

According to Golf.com, Rahm, alongside his Legion XIII team, organized a charter flight to ensure the stranded players could return in time for the tournament. This required a significant detour involving a 280-mile drive from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, where they boarded an eight-hour flight. They arrived in Hong Kong on Wednesday, just in time for the tournament.

The players affected included notable names such as Lee Westwood, Sam Horsfield, Adrian Meronk, Tom McKibbin, Caleb Surratt, and Anirban Lahiri. Another player, Laurie Canter, managed to arrange transportation for himself with his family.

Detry had initially been booked on an Emirates flight that departed from Dubai and arrived in Hong Kong later on Wednesday. “That was very unknown on Tuesday,” he noted, emphasizing the uncertainty surrounding travel plans that week.

Rahm’s Sense of Duty

Despite the chaos, Rahm viewed his actions as a necessary duty. He declined a deal from the European tour early in the week that would have lifted fines for participating in LIV Golf events, indicating his commitment to helping his fellow competitors. “I was raised with certain values, that if you have the ability and capability of helping somebody… especially in a scenario like that where my main focus essentially was getting them out of there, not necessarily playing a tournament,” Rahm explained.

He acknowledged the tense atmosphere created by the regional instability, stating, “With the ever-changing environment, it looked kind of dark for a second. But yeah, here they are. Never thought they would be able to come. It’s amazing that so many of them are safe and that’s the most important thing.”

This incident not only highlights the unpredictability of international travel for professional athletes but also showcases the camaraderie within the sport. As Detry and Rahm prepare for the final rounds of the tournament, their shared experience serves as a reminder of the challenges athletes can face both on and off the course.
