Falmouth Alpine Teams Capture SMAA Championships with Dominance

Falmouth High School’s Alpine ski teams showcased their prowess at the Southern Maine Activities Association (SMAA) championships, securing both the boys’ and girls’ team titles on February 14, 2024. The event took place at Pleasant Mountain, where individual performances bolstered Falmouth’s claim to victory.

In the boys’ competition, Ian Christie emerged as a standout athlete. He clinched individual championships in both the slalom and giant slalom events. Christie completed the slalom in a two-run aggregate time of 1:07.28 and dominated the giant slalom with a total time of 1:15.73. His impressive performance contributed to Falmouth accumulating a total of 28 points, outpacing competitors such as Kennebunk, which scored 89 points, Marshwood with 95 points, and Scarborough with 263 points.

Falmouth’s boys’ team demonstrated remarkable depth in the slalom event, securing multiple top-five finishes. Liam Keefer placed second, followed closely by Zach Small in fourth and Blake Kingsley in fifth. Keefer and Kingsley also excelled in the giant slalom, finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Falmouth is now poised to pursue its third consecutive Class A title at Saddleback on February 23-24, 2024.

The girls’ team also displayed exceptional skill, amassing 47 points to defeat Scarborough (91 points), Kennebunk (111 points), Marshwood (122 points), and Windham (182 points). Margo Hesson led the way for the girls, winning the slalom with a time of 1:12.25 and finishing second in the giant slalom with a time of 1:21.67. She was supported by Ella Morse, who placed fifth in slalom and sixth in giant slalom, along with Bridget Jacobsen, who finished fourth in giant slalom and seventh in slalom.

In the giant slalom, Lena Asali of Scarborough captured first place with a time of 1:21.54, while also securing a fourth-place finish in slalom. Close competitors included Hazel Martin from Marshwood, who took second in slalom and third in giant slalom, and Maeve Long, who finished third in slalom. Eliza Nass of Kennebunk rounded out the top-five finishers in giant slalom.

On the boys’ side, Sam Good of Kennebunk earned second place in giant slalom and third in slalom, while teammate Jimmy McClellan secured a third-place finish in giant slalom.

Falmouth’s success at the SMAA championships underscores the strength and dedication of its Alpine ski program, with both teams looking forward to future competitions as they aim for continued excellence in the upcoming Class A events.
