Former NFL running back Doug Martin died in police custody early on the morning of March 25, 2023, following an incident at a residence in Oakland, California. The Oakland Police Department confirmed the details on March 27, stating that officers responded to a call regarding a break-in shortly after 04:15.
According to the police statement, Martin was involved in a break-in when officers encountered him. “While responding officers were attempting to detain him, a brief struggle occurred. After being taken into custody, Martin became unresponsive,” the statement read. Emergency medical personnel provided aid at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he later died. He was 36 years old.
Martin’s family released a statement expressing their grief: “It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning. Cause of death is currently unconfirmed. Please respect our privacy at this time.”
Investigation Underway Following Incident
Following the incident, the Oakland Police Department announced that the in-custody death will be investigated by multiple agencies, including the Homicide Section, the Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. This multi-agency approach aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the investigation.
Martin spent six of his seven seasons in the NFL with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he became well known as a fan favorite. The franchise noted his significant impact on the team and recognized him as one of the top 50 players in their history during their 50-year anniversary celebration.
Standing at just 5-foot-9, Martin was nicknamed the “Muscle Hamster” for his powerful running style. Over his career, he amassed 5,356 yards and scored 30 touchdowns. Drafted in the first round (No. 31 overall) by Tampa Bay in 2012, Martin had an impressive rookie season, rushing for 1,454 yards and scoring 11 touchdowns. He also caught 49 passes for 472 yards and one touchdown, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl.
A Legacy Remembered
Martin’s standout year came in 2015, when he was named an All-Pro after rushing for 1,402 yards and scoring six touchdowns. He also recorded 33 receptions for 271 yards and another touchdown that season. After spending two more years with the Buccaneers, he concluded his career with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018.
Before his NFL career, Martin was a star at Boise State, where he played from 2007 to 2011. He ranks among the top 10 in career rushing yards and rushing touchdowns at the university and was a first-team all-conference honoree on two occasions.
The circumstances surrounding Martin’s death have raised concerns within the community and among fans. As investigations continue, many are reflecting on the athlete’s contributions to football and the impact he made during his career.
