The Ironton Fighting Tigers claimed a significant victory on December 19, 2023, defeating the Chesapeake Panthers 49-45 in a closely contested boys basketball match. This win, held at the Conley Center in Ironton, Ohio, not only marked the Tigers’ fifth consecutive victory but also positioned them temporarily at the top of the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) standings.
Ironton, who had previously dominated their first four games of the season, took an early lead against the Panthers. After falling behind 2-0, the Tigers responded with a 10-point run, establishing a foothold that they would not relinquish. The game turned decisively in the third quarter when Ironton outscored Chesapeake 11-2, capitalizing on a notable scoring drought for the Panthers that lasted over nine minutes.
Despite a strong effort from Chesapeake, including a late-game rally that brought them within two points at 47-45 after their only three-pointer of the night, the Fighting Tigers maintained composure. In the final moments, senior Maddix Markel sealed the victory by converting three of four free throws, ensuring Ironton left the court victorious.
This win against the Panthers, previously unbeaten and considered the preseason OVC favorites, highlighted the Tigers’ resilience. With a current record of 5-0 and 2-0 in the conference, Ironton shares the lead with the defending champions, Fairland, setting up an important matchup on Saturday where the winner will take sole possession of first place.
Coach Drew Stevens reflected on the game and the team’s progress. “We’re still chasing to get where they (Panthers) are,” he remarked, acknowledging the strength of Chesapeake and their successful run last season. Despite the pressure, Stevens praised his players for their defensive efforts and their ability to fight through adversity.
Throughout the match, the Fighting Tigers showcased a balanced offensive attack. Ashton Layne led the scoring with 15 points and an impressive 19 rebounds, while Brycen Mullins added 13 points, including key three-pointers. The Tigers’ effective perimeter shooting proved to be a decisive factor, as they outperformed the Panthers from beyond the arc, making seven three-pointers to Chesapeake’s single conversion.
Chesapeake’s Maddox Kazee led his team with 14 points, but the Panthers struggled to find their rhythm in the second half, particularly in the third quarter where they managed only two points. The aggressive defense from Ironton was instrumental in limiting Chesapeake’s scoring opportunities, forcing them to miss 14 shots during that critical period.
The Panthers, with their record now at 4-1 and 1-1 in the OVC, will regroup as they head into the holiday break. Despite the setback, Coach Steven Ater remains optimistic about his team’s abilities. “They are still a great basketball team, regardless of tonight,” he stated, emphasizing the need for continued improvement.
As the Fighting Tigers prepare for their showdown against Fairland, Coach Stevens expressed pride in his team’s development and commitment to defensive play. “Effort doesn’t require a lot. We don’t have to hit shots in order to play defense,” he concluded, highlighting the foundation he aims to build within the program.
With the OVC standings tight and competition heating up, the upcoming match against Fairland promises to be a pivotal moment for both teams as they vie for supremacy in the conference.
