The Boston Celtics are gearing up for a home game against the Phoenix Suns on March 25, 2024, with a rejuvenated Jayson Tatum leading the charge. Tatum, who has recently returned from surgery for a ruptured right Achilles tendon, played a season-high 32 minutes in the Celtics’ last outing, contributing significantly to their 111-100 victory over the Washington Wizards.
In that game, Tatum showcased his growing confidence and skill, finishing with 20 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists. Reflecting on his performance, Tatum expressed a sense of relief, stating, “Compared to the first game, I feel a lot more relaxed. Obviously, the first game was such a big day and moment. I’m finding more and more moments each game where I’m feeling more confident, more explosive.”
After returning to the court, Tatum played three consecutive games but took a break during a narrow 104-102 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He acknowledged the importance of adhering to a long-term recovery plan, saying, “I obviously understand the bigger picture and the plan. Sticking with the plan in the moment is kind of tough. Obviously, I want to be out there as much as possible.”
In addition to Tatum’s contributions, Celtics center Neemias Queta delivered an impressive offensive performance against the Wizards, scoring 24 points on 11-of-13 shooting. Queta’s standout moment came in the first quarter, where he scored 13 points—the highest of his NBA career in a single quarter—and achieved a total of 22 points by halftime. He also recorded 10 rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla praised Queta’s adaptability, stating, “I think just giving the game what it needs… It called for (scoring) in the beginning, and I thought later in the game it called for his ability to screen and get guys open.”
The Suns, meanwhile, are coming off a disappointing 122-115 loss to the Toronto Raptors, which snapped a four-game winning streak. During that game, the Suns squandered a 10-point lead late in the fourth quarter, allowing the Raptors to orchestrate a 23-5 run. Jalen Green led the Suns with 34 points, hitting a career-high eight three-pointers, while Devin Booker added 31 points.
Booker reflected on his team’s late-game performance, noting, “Not that good. Feel like the wear down of a back-to-back definitely got to us on both ends. We got a little stagnant (with a) new lineup out there. It just didn’t work out.”
Suns coach Jordan Ott opted for a smaller lineup to counter the Raptors’ physicality but acknowledged it came with its challenges. “There were spots there when we didn’t rebound. In the beginning of the fourth, we gave them a second chance. We had a little gap and probably could have made it a little bigger,” he explained.
As the Celtics and Suns prepare to face off, both teams will be looking to find their rhythm and capitalize on their respective strengths. With Tatum’s return to form and Queta’s emerging role, the Celtics will aim to build on their recent success, while the Suns will seek to bounce back from their recent defeat. The upcoming matchup promises to be an exciting encounter for fans and players alike.
