Lakeview Girls Basketball Aims High Under New Coach Whalen

Lakeview High School’s girls basketball team is gearing up for an ambitious new season, aiming to build on their first winning record in a decade. The Wildcats, under the leadership of Aaron Whalen, their second head coach in two years, are ready to embrace this fresh chapter. Last season, the team finished with a record of 13-11 and placed fourth in the Central State Activities Association (CSAA) White conference.

The Wildcats will face unique challenges as they navigate this transition. With only one senior, Katelyn Buchner, on the roster, Whalen’s task is to foster teamwork and resilience among a young group. “Our numbers are small, but they work really hard,” Whalen remarked, noting the team’s eagerness to improve and bond on the court.

Buchner, now in her fourth year at the varsity level, expressed optimism about the upcoming season. “I feel like we’re definitely still getting used to each other a little bit. Once we start fully understanding each other, we’ll be good defenders and very strong on offense,” she said. Her enthusiasm reflects a shared sentiment among players as they adapt to Whalen’s coaching style.

Whalen brings a wealth of experience from previous coaching roles with tournament-level teams in Grand Rapids, but this marks his first venture into high school coaching. His decision to apply for the position was influenced by personal circumstances, particularly his daughter’s choice not to play her senior year. “When the opportunity came up, I thought to throw my hat in for it,” he explained.

As they prepare for the season, the Wildcats are focusing on skills development, particularly shooting. Buchner noted that the team has made significant progress in their shooting drills, which will be crucial as they strive for success. Whalen added that establishing a strong team culture centered around the players’ experiences is a priority. “This is about their experience, not mine,” he stated emphatically.

The Wildcats’ previous season was characterized by a notable improvement in ball handling and teamwork. Buchner attributed much of their success last year to these skills, which she hopes will carry over into the current season. With only two of last season’s starters returning, including Buchner and junior Madison Bristol, the team is keen to integrate new players and build on their previous achievements.

Looking ahead, Buchner is embracing her role as a leader, aiming to enhance her communication skills and guide her teammates effectively. “Being a captain this season is helping me develop more,” she commented. Whalen praised her natural leadership qualities, stating, “Katelyn is a natural leader and the girls respect her.”

The Wildcats are determined to embrace the challenges of a new season while maintaining their competitive spirit. Whalen anticipates that the team will need a few games to find their rhythm but is confident in their potential. “Above all else, we want to compete every week and see how we gel together,” he said.

As the season progresses, Buchner believes fans can expect significant improvements in both defense and offense. “I think it’s going to be a good season and super fun to watch,” she remarked. With a confident outlook, the Wildcats aim to thrive on positive experiences and build a strong foundation for future success.

The Lakeview girls basketball team is poised for an exciting season, ready to face rivals and create memorable moments on the court. With a commitment to teamwork and growth, the Wildcats are set to make their mark in the 2023-2024 season.
