Lynn Classical emerged victorious against Lynn English in a thrilling powderpuff football game held on November 5, 2023, at Manning Field. The Lady Rams secured a 19-12 win, marking their fourth consecutive victory in this annual matchup. Enthusiastic fans adorned in beanies and blankets filled the stands, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Classical coach Rod Valrie expressed pride in his team’s performance, stating, “It’s all about being part of a team. They all gained a lot and learned a lot. I’m glad we were able to get a ‘W’ today and finish strong.” Meanwhile, English coach Madison Molea praised her players despite the loss, noting that her squad, with only 23 participants compared to Classical’s 59, played hard and enjoyed the experience.
The game commenced with an electric performance of the national anthem by Azriella Jorge, who later showcased her skills on the field. Jorge ignited the scoring for the Lady Rams, sprinting 55 yards down the right sideline for the first touchdown, followed by a successful extra-point kick from McKenna Duncan. This early lead set the tone for a competitive matchup.
In the second quarter, Jorge continued to shine, adding another touchdown that brought Classical’s lead to 13-0. As the first half neared its conclusion, English’s Maddy McHale demonstrated impressive speed with a substantial gain, yet the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score before halftime.
The second half saw a shift as English developed a stronger aerial game. Dayana Hios Edwards connected with Jayleen Novas-Rivera for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, igniting hopes for a comeback. Despite this, the Lady Rams maintained their lead with a rushing score from Bianca Christalin that put them ahead 19-12.
Molea reflected on the adjustments made during the game, stating, “We went into the locker room and drew up a whole new formation on the board… their passing game in the second half definitely carried us. I wish the outcome was different, but as long as they had fun and played hard, that’s all that matters.”
With just 20 seconds remaining in the game, English had a chance to equalize but was thwarted by a critical fourth-down stop. The clock ran out before they could execute a final drive, sealing the victory for Classical. Key contributions came from Suri Reyes, Aysia Olaes, and Brooke Braswell for Classical, while English’s standout players included Maria Perry and Catherine Bushway.
Valrie affectionately referred to his star players as “Flash and Dash,” emphasizing their speed and skill once they reached the outside. Following the conclusion of the match, players exchanged handshakes in a display of sportsmanship, after which Classical was presented with the trophy.
Both teams now look forward to their next challenge, the Thanksgiving football game scheduled for November 9, 2023, at Manning Field, where they will continue their spirited rivalry.
