Eight local soccer teams recently showcased their talent at the annual Walt Zinco District Cup held in Anderson. This highly anticipated tournament, celebrated for highlighting some of the district’s best recreational teams, unfolded over an exhilarating weekend filled with sportsmanship and teamwork. The event not only allowed participants to compete fiercely but also to represent their community with pride.
The tournament saw remarkable performances, with four teams achieving top placements in their respective divisions. Each squad exhibited impressive skill, determination, and growth throughout the event, contributing to a vibrant atmosphere.
U10 Girls Division Shines
The U10 Girls division proved to be a highlight for local teams, particularly the Flash, who claimed the championship title. Under the guidance of Coach Ryan Keebler, the team completed an undefeated season, culminating in this significant victory. Keebler expressed his pride, stating, “Coaching these girls has been a true privilege. Witnessing their growth as soccer players and their bonds as friends off the field has been remarkable. Bringing the District Cup back to Red Bluff is the perfect finale to an undefeated season.”
In a competitive atmosphere, the Xtreme secured second place, narrowly missing the top spot in a thrilling overtime match. Coaches Jordan Sinclair, Jimmy Boyes, and Maria Rosales led the team through a season characterized by energetic performances and strong teamwork.
Strong Showings from U12 Boys
In the U12 Boys division, the Adrenaline team finished as runners-up. Coach Gerardo Parra praised the players for their growth and dedication, saying, “I’ve worked with most of these boys for a few seasons. They’ve grown into such amazing players that the whole town can be proud of.” Their journey to the finals demonstrated resilience and sportsmanship, earning respect from their opponents.
The Thunder team also made a significant impact by finishing in third place. Led by coaches Bernie Villavicencio, Andy Emerick, Gavin Lethbridge, and Avery Smith, Thunder displayed an impressive record, winning every match and conceding only two goals throughout the tournament. Their team motto—“Be brave, trust your team, give no excuses”—was evident in their cohesive play.
Other participating teams also made notable contributions to the weekend’s excitement. The U10 Boys Predators clinched three victories before facing a challenging final match. Coach Victor Trejo-Gonzalez emphasized the exceptional teamwork displayed by his players throughout the tournament.
The Mustangs in the U10 Boys category demonstrated significant improvement and teamwork under Coach Richard O’Campo. He remarked on the value of witnessing the players develop friendships while enjoying the game.
In the U12 Girls division, the Lightning team kicked off the tournament with a win, showcasing skill and determination in each match, while the U14 Boys Assassins faced tough competition but exhibited tremendous heart and growth throughout their matches.
