Minnesota State Mankato Defeats Dragons 2-0 in Home Finale
The Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons faced a challenging match against the No. 2-ranked Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks, losing 2-0 in their home finale on October 29, 2023. The game, held at Nemzek Soccer Field, also marked Senior Day for the Dragons, who struggled against a formidable opponent that remains unbeaten this season.
The Mavericks took control early in the match, with Addison Clarey scoring the opening goal just nine minutes into play. The swift strike set the tone for the Mavericks, who continued to apply pressure throughout the game. Amara Smith later secured the victory with an insurance goal in the 72nd minute, cementing the Mavericks’ dominance on the field.
Statistically, the Mavericks outperformed the Dragons significantly, registering a total of 29 shots compared to 18 from Minnesota State Moorhead. The difference in accuracy was notable, as the Mavericks achieved 16 shots on target while the Dragons managed only five. Jensen Seidel led the Dragons in attempts with four shots, showcasing his offensive efforts despite the team’s overall struggle.
In goal, Rylee Truslow and Quinn Carter shared duties for the Dragons, each making seven saves in an attempt to fend off the relentless Mavericks’ offense. Despite their efforts, the Dragons could not find the back of the net, marking their sixth consecutive loss. The current season record stands at 3-11-1 overall and 2-10-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC).
On the other hand, the Mavericks improved their impressive record to 13-0-2, including an 11-0-1 mark in conference play. Their performance not only solidified their position as one of the top teams in NCAA Division II but also highlighted their ability to maintain an unbeaten streak as the season progresses.
Looking ahead, Minnesota State Moorhead will travel to face the University of Mary on Friday, October 31, 2023. The matchup is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. and will provide the Dragons with an opportunity to break their losing streak against a team currently holding a record of 7-5-3 and 5-4-3 in the NSIC. The upcoming game will be crucial as the Dragons aim to regain momentum before the season concludes.
