North Texas Stars Caleb Hawkins and Ashton Gray Eye Transfer Portal

The North Texas Mean Green football team faces potential roster changes following their victory in the New Mexico Bowl. Shortly after defeating San Diego State for their first bowl win since 2013, reports emerged that star running back Caleb Hawkins and fellow running back Ashton Gray intend to enter the transfer portal.

In the bowl game, Hawkins delivered an impressive performance, amassing 198 yards on 30 carries and scoring two touchdowns. Gray also made a significant contribution with 152 yards on 16 carries, adding two touchdowns of his own. Hawkins further showcased his versatility by catching three passes for 25 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Hawkins’ achievements throughout the season have been noteworthy. As a true freshman, he received accolades such as the American Conference Rookie of the Year and was named to the first team all-conference. Leading the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) in rushing touchdowns, he concluded the season with 1,432 rushing yards, 370 receiving yards, and a total of 29 touchdowns from 230 carries and 32 receptions.

The impending departure of Hawkins and Gray raises questions about the future of the Mean Green program. With head coach Eric Morris already leaving for Oklahoma State, the uncertainty surrounding the team could lead to further changes in the roster.

The next significant decision will revolve around star quarterback Drew Mestemaker, whose potential transfer could further impact the team’s composition. As college athletics continue to evolve, the North Texas Mean Green may see additional players following Hawkins and Gray into the transfer portal.

As the situation develops, fans and analysts will be closely watching the decisions of these key players and how it affects the Mean Green’s prospects for the upcoming season.
