Ovechkin Eyes Historic Goal as Capitals Face Senators
Alex Ovechkin is on the brink of NHL history as he prepares to suit up for his 1,500th regular-season game with the Washington Capitals against the Ottawa Senators on November 4, 2023. Ovechkin, the league’s all-time leading scorer, needs just one goal to reach the milestone of 900 career goals. This significant matchup will take place at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
The 40-year-old left winger is coming off a strong performance where he recorded one goal and one assist in the Capitals’ 5-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. Ovechkin’s goal was the game-winner, marking the 137th game-winning goal of his career, a record he holds in the NHL. The Capitals secured the win with a dominant four-goal third period, though Coach Spencer Carbery emphasized the need for improvement despite the lopsided scoreline.
“We just stole two points,” Carbery stated. “Logan [Thompson] was fantastic, especially to keep us in it in the first — whatever it was — 40 minutes of the game.” The Capitals have garnered victories in six of their last seven games, showcasing their resilience. Forward Dylan Strome commented, “It wasn’t pretty, but we got the job done.”
Ovechkin is expected to continue his pursuit of 900 goals with the Capitals’ current momentum. His teammate Tom Wilson has also been in fine form, contributing four goals and five assists during a five-game point streak. The Capitals are likely to turn to goaltender Charlie Lindgren for this pivotal game. Lindgren has a record of 1-1-0 this season, with a 2.04 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage.
Meanwhile, the Senators arrive in Washington with renewed confidence following a 2-1 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on November 2, 2023. That win ended a two-game losing streak, although Ottawa has struggled with just two wins in their last seven games. Forward Claude Giroux highlighted the effort required to secure the win, stating, “We had to work hard for this win and sometimes it’s going to be like that.”
The Senators’ goaltender Linus Ullmark played a crucial role in their victory, making 22 saves. This performance could signify a turning point for the team, which is seeking to build on a playoff berth from the previous season. The absence of captain Brady Tkachuk, who is sidelined for at least a month due to thumb surgery, has been a significant challenge for Ottawa.
Coach Travis Green emphasized the importance of contributions from the entire lineup in Tkachuk’s absence. “You need it,” he remarked, noting that the team must rally together to compensate for the loss of their captain. In their win against Philadelphia, players like Michael Amadio and Olle Lycksell stepped up, scoring vital goals in the comeback.
As the Capitals and Senators prepare to face off, all eyes will be on Ovechkin as he seeks to etch his name deeper into the annals of hockey history. The matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter for fans, with the potential for a historic moment in the game.
