Patriots Overcome Run Game Struggles in Victory Against Titans

The New England Patriots successfully addressed a critical weakness in their run game during a dominant performance against the Tennessee Titans on October 15, 2023. In a convincing 31-13 victory, the Patriots collectively rushed for 175 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries, marking their fourth consecutive win.
The Patriots’ run game had been a significant concern leading up to this matchup. Despite their winning streak, the team struggled to find consistency in their rushing attack. This performance showcased a marked improvement, as players emphasized the importance of establishing the run early in the game. The first drive featured four consecutive runs, gaining 38 yards and setting the tone for the rest of the match.
Head coach Mike Vrabel highlighted the need for decisiveness in the run game. “I thought we were more decisive,” he stated in an interview with WEEI. “We gave them a chance early at the line of scrimmage. There’s a lot there to continue to improve on.” Vrabel acknowledged that while the offensive line played a critical role, the running backs needed to focus on hitting the line of scrimmage with purpose rather than hesitating.
One of the concerns for the Patriots had been ball security, particularly due to fumbling issues with running backs, including Rhamondre Stevenson. Vrabel addressed this by emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus, stating, “We don’t want to get lackadaisical at the sidelines or going to the ground. Don’t let ball security paralyze us.”
Stevenson was instrumental in the win, carrying the ball 18 times for 88 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Drake Maye also contributed effectively on the ground, rushing for 62 yards on eight attempts.
The Patriots’ ability to capitalize on their running game opens new possibilities as they look to maintain momentum in their upcoming matches. With a stronger emphasis on decisive running and improved ball security, the team is poised to enhance its offensive capabilities further. The challenge now lies in sustaining this performance level as they prepare for future opponents.
