Pittsburgh International Airport Unveils $1.7 Billion Terminal

Passengers arriving at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) will experience a significant upgrade beginning March 14, 2024, with the opening of a new $1.7 billion landside terminal. Starting at 02:00, the new facility will eliminate the need for passengers to use a tram to reach their gates, offering a more direct and streamlined travel experience.

The airport anticipates approximately 25,000 travelers on the opening day, marking a new era for the region’s aviation services. The modern design features high ceilings and easy access to gates following security checks.

Accessing the New Terminal

While the exit from I-376 remains unchanged, new overhead signage will guide drivers to the airport. The roads leading to the old terminal will be closed, directing traffic to the new terminal. A new “wait lot” has been established for drivers to park free for up to one hour before picking up passengers. Airport personnel wearing high-visibility purple vests will be present to assist travelers as they navigate the new layout on opening day.

Parking options have also been enhanced. The new Terminal Garage, featuring 3,300 spaces, is conveniently located next to the terminal. Daily parking rates are set at $35, though drivers can secure discounted rates as low as $30 by booking in advance through parkatpit.com.

The Terminal Lot, adjacent to the garage, offers an additional 2,800 spaces at a daily rate of $25, with early bookings available for as low as $19. For those looking for a budget-friendly option, the Shuttle Lot, which encompasses the former Economy, Long Term, and Extended lots, charges $12 per day, dropping to $8 with advance reservations. Shuttle buses, featuring enhanced seating and live tracking displays, will take about ten minutes to ferry passengers to the terminal.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

Once inside the new terminal, travelers will notice a streamlined security process. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will operate 12 lanes equipped with advanced scanners to expedite screening. Passengers can keep their shoes on, laptops in bags, and liquids sealed in their containers, significantly improving the efficiency of the security check.

After passing through security, travelers will traverse a bridge leading to a tunnel that opens into a spacious great hall, inspired by the experience of emerging from the Fort Pitt Tunnel into the city of Pittsburgh. This area features outdoor terraces, a new baggage system designed to reduce travel distances, and various art installations highlighting both local culture and contemporary creativity.

The inaugural flight from the new terminal is scheduled for around 05:00 on March 14, 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Pittsburgh International Airport and its travelers. As the airport adapts to its new facilities, it aims to enhance the overall travel experience for all passengers.
