Trevor Story Positioned as Alex Bregman’s Successor for Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox are looking to fill the leadership void left by Alex Bregman, and team president and chief executive officer Sam Kennedy has identified Trevor Story as a prime candidate. Bregman, who played a pivotal role both on the field and in the clubhouse during the 2025 season, has set a high standard for leadership that will be challenging to replicate.

During his time with the Red Sox, Bregman became a mentor to younger players like Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer. His presence was felt throughout the organization, particularly as these young talents transitioned to the major leagues. Kennedy, speaking on WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show,” expressed confidence in Story’s ability to step into a leadership role. “From where I sit, Trevor Story has always been in that leadership role and a guy that everyone looks to. That goes without saying,” he stated.

Story, who joined the Red Sox before the 2022 season, demonstrated his value to the team during the 2025 season. He had a standout year, achieving a batting average of .263 with a .308 on-base percentage, 25 home runs, 96 RBIs, 31 stolen bases, and 91 runs scored in 157 games. Story’s performance not only showcased his skills but also solidified his status as a team leader.

The 2025 season marked the first time Story was fully healthy since joining Boston, and he proved to be a key contributor despite previous injuries. Each offseason, he hosts a training camp for teammates, fostering a sense of community and collaboration within the team. His commitment to the organization was further highlighted when he chose to opt in for the upcoming season rather than pursue potentially more lucrative offers elsewhere.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora recounted a conversation with Story shortly after the team’s elimination from the playoffs last year. “He opted in and he decided to stay here,” Cora recalled. “That was right away. We had that conversation five minutes after the last out in New York. He came to me, he came to the office like, ‘I’m in. I ain’t going nowhere.’”

Story himself elaborated on his decision to remain with the Red Sox, emphasizing a deeper motivation beyond financial incentives. “There could have been a market out there where I could get more money,” he explained. “It wasn’t about that for me. I felt like I came here for a reason. It’s the unfinished business side of it. The promise of our team, the young guys coming up and the additions that we made play even more into that.”

His passion for the organization and belief in his teammates is evident. “I’m just in love with this place, man. We have a special group, it’s a great organization and I believe in the guys. I believe in the team we have and that’s really what it was about,” Story added.

Kennedy’s assertion that Story is the right choice to assume a leadership role aligns with the sentiments shared by both Cora and Story. As the Red Sox prepare for the next season, they look to build on the successes of the past while instilling a strong sense of camaraderie and leadership within the team. As they navigate this transition, the contributions of Trevor Story will be crucial for the Red Sox as they aim to maintain a competitive edge in the league.
