The Westbrook High School football team triumphed over Gorham High School in a thrilling match, securing the inaugural River Bowl trophy on October 24, 2023. The final score was a close 12-10, marking a significant victory for the Blue Blazes on their home turf. This event drew large crowds, with bleachers filled on both sides and additional fans standing to witness the excitement.
The River Bowl is a newly established title for the annual rivalry game between these two schools. This year, coaches from both teams collaborated with the Westbrook-Gorham Rotary to create a trophy that symbolizes the competitive spirit of this long-standing rivalry.
Celebrations and Recognition
During the post-game festivities, Eden Ayers, a member of the Westbrook High School Interact Club, presented the trophy to a jubilant Sam Johnson, head coach of the Blue Blazes. Following the presentation, Johnson joined his players on the field to celebrate their victory.
In recognition of outstanding performances, Andre Hicks was named the most valuable player for Westbrook, while Gorham’s honor went to Atticus Whitten. The excitement of the game was further amplified by the Westbrook High School marching band, which performed the National Anthem before kickoff and entertained spectators during halftime.
Next year, the River Bowl will be hosted on Gorham’s home field, promising another thrilling chapter in this developing rivalry. As both teams prepare for the postseason, the Blue Blazes look forward to building on this momentum from their first River Bowl victory.
