The Ralston Valley Mustangs, led by dual-threat quarterback Zeke Andrews, are set to make their first appearance in a state title game on Saturday, following a remarkable season. The Mustangs secured their place in the Class 5A championship after a series of thrilling performances, culminating in a nail-biting semifinal victory last week.
Andrews has been a pivotal figure for Ralston Valley this season. His standout moment came during a non-conference clash against Valor Christian on September 26, 2023. In a tightly contested game, Andrews showcased his determination and skill by executing a remarkable touchdown run. After identifying a linebacker blitz, he evaded defenders, powered through tackles, and charged into the end zone, a play that not only highlighted his athleticism but also represented his leadership on the field. “When Zeke ran that linebacker over into the end zone, that play summarized the kind of work he’s put in over the last two years as a starter,” said Jared Yannacito, head coach of Ralston Valley.
The Mustangs, boasting a perfect record of 13-0, faced numerous challenges this season. The journey was marked by adversity, including a season-ending injury to junior running back Colton Stratman in their opening game against Erie. Andrews himself suffered a lacerated kidney on October 16 against Columbine, sidelining him for two games. Despite these setbacks, the team rallied, with junior Sawyer Blomquist stepping up as the primary running back and Logan Gabler leading the offense during Andrews’ absence.
In a dramatic semifinal match against Mountain Vista, Ralston Valley overcame a 14-0 deficit in the first quarter, rallying to a 31-28 victory with a last-second field goal. Junior wide receiver Levi Rillos credited Andrews’ vocal leadership as a key motivator throughout the season. “He’s always been a role model to other players… He’s using his voice to make sure we get into the right plays,” Rillos commented.
As the Mustangs prepare to face the formidable Cherry Creek Bruins, who have made eight consecutive title game appearances, the focus remains on maintaining their identity and playing to their strengths. Andrews has thrown for 2,618 yards this season with 25 touchdowns and only three interceptions, while also contributing 749 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns on the ground. Head coach Dave Logan of Cherry Creek acknowledged the challenge posed by Andrews, noting, “He can throw it with accuracy, he’s an excellent athlete, he’s tough… it all starts with him.”
In a recent development, Andrews de-committed from Colorado State University after discussions with the Rams’ new head coach, Jim Mora. The coaching staff indicated that they would pursue other recruits for the quarterback position, prompting Andrews to reassess his options with other colleges. Despite this uncertainty, his focus remains on leading his team to victory on Saturday.
As Ralston Valley looks to cap off a historic season, the message is clear: the Mustangs aim to disrupt the Cherry Creek dynasty. Rillos stated, “We just need to be who we are, and play how we’ve been playing to get here.” With Andrews at the helm, the Mustangs are ready to make their mark in Colorado high school football history.
