The John D. Spreckels Center has announced the addition of Zumba Gold classes on Tuesday mornings and Saturday mornings, responding to rising interest in the program. The low-impact dance fitness classes will take place at 1019 7th Street, starting at 10 a.m. on both days. These sessions are designed for individuals of all ages and fitness levels, offering a fun way to kick off the weekend.
Marg Stark, a certified instructor, will lead the classes. She explains that Zumba Gold is tailored to be gentler on the joints compared to traditional Zumba. “It features no pivots or jumps,” Stark said. “Participants can enjoy the lively Latin and pop rhythms along with simple choreography, making it feel more like a party than a workout.” She describes the experience as “exercise in disguise,” allowing participants to engage in fitness without the late-night atmosphere of a club.
Research supports the significant health benefits of group dance classes, according to Stark. She emphasizes that the combination of cardiovascular activity, cognitive engagement from following dance steps, and social interaction contributes to improved health outcomes. Benefits include weight loss, reduced risk of dementia and heart disease, improved mood, and a decrease in fall risk.
Community engagement is a core aspect of Zumba Gold. The classes bring people together for special events and flash mobs throughout the area. Last year, participants collaborated with Sue Allen Villalva’s Zumba class to perform at the Coronado Film Festival, specifically during the screening of “Mamma Mia” at Hotel Del. They also showcased their energy at the Main Street “Small Business Saturday” events.
Those interested in joining should wear sneakers and bring a water bottle. The cost for walk-ins is $17, but registering for the monthly session reduces the price to $12 per class for residents of Coronado. For added convenience, Stark teaches classes at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays and 10 a.m. on Saturdays, with discounts available for individuals who register for both days.
For more information or to register for classes, individuals can contact Marg Stark at [email protected]. Stark resides in Imperial Beach after spending a decade raising her family in Coronado.
This expansion of Zumba Gold at the Spreckels Center reflects a commitment to fostering community health and well-being through accessible and enjoyable fitness options.
