$1 Million Schiller Foundation Scholarship Launches for LTCC Students
URGENT UPDATE: A generous donation of $1 million has just established the Schiller Foundation Economics Scholarship at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC), aimed at supporting transfer students pursuing economics. This groundbreaking initiative was made possible by esteemed economist and educator Dr. Bradley R. Schiller, who aims to empower future scholars to explore how economics impacts everyday life.
The scholarship, announced today in South Lake Tahoe, California, offers up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of two years to eligible students. It is designed specifically for LTCC students who have completed at least two college-level economics courses and plan to transfer to four-year universities. This opportunity is a direct response to the need for greater educational access in the field of economics.
LTCC Superintendent/President Jeff DeFranco expressed gratitude for Dr. Schiller’s contribution, stating, “This scholarship will honor his remarkable career and ensure that future students carry forward his vision of economics as a force for positive change.”
Dr. Schiller’s impressive background includes teaching at prestigious institutions such as American University, UC Berkeley, and the University of Maryland. He has advised multiple U.S. Presidents and authored widely used economics textbooks, including The Economy Today and The Economics of Poverty and Discrimination.
In his own words, Dr. Schiller emphasized the scholarship’s goal: “Education opens doors to opportunity and understanding. This scholarship is meant to help LTCC students see how economics connects to everyday life and to support their continued success at a four-year university.”
Scholarship Details:
– Award size: Up to $10,000 per year for a maximum of two years
– Breakdown: $7,000 for tuition and fees, $3,000 for books and living expenses
– Core eligibility:
– Demonstrated interest in economics
– Completion of two college-level economics courses
– Acceptance to a four-year institution
– Strong academic performance (B average or higher in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics)
– Preference for LTCC students who have completed at least 30 LTCC units
Renewal in the second year requires maintaining a 3.0 GPA with at least 20 semester units completed at the four-year institution.
