UPDATE: After a devastating 10 months since the Eaton Fire, Mariposa Junction in Altadena is set to officially reopen this Saturday, November 4, 2023. A special ribbon-cutting ceremony will kick off the celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., marking a significant milestone for the community and the local businesses that were forced to close.
Five cherished businesses along Mariposa Junction will resume operations after suffering extensive damage during the fire. This reopening is not just a business revival; it symbolizes resilience in the face of tragedy. Store owner Adriana Melina, whose shop Sidecca survived the flames, expressed her emotional journey, stating,
“I actually heard through a text message on the 8th that everything on this block was gone. Then I saw the store on the news.”
The community’s support has been overwhelming. Melina reported a surge in online sales and interest from customers eager to return. “The demand for ‘all things Altadena’ helped Sidecca hang on,” she said, highlighting a unique connection to her hometown.
Also reopening are Carciofi Design, owned by Caroline Britton, who lost her home but found strength in community support. Next door, the Gallery at the End of the World will feature works from local artists, many of whom were also affected by the fire. Gallery owner Ben McGinty emphasized the impact of the tragedy on artists, stating, “All the artists involved have been affected in some way, either losing their home or studio.”
The reopening celebration will offer food, beverages, and giveaways for the first 100 guests, reinforcing community spirit as Altadena continues to heal.
Despite the joyous atmosphere, Melina acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying, “With most of my community still unable to move home, difficult months are ahead.” However, she remains committed to supporting her neighbors and fostering a sense of hope.
This event is not just about business; it highlights the emotional ties and resilience of the Altadena community, proving that together, they can rebuild and thrive.
