Angel City FC Bids Emotional Farewell to Christen Press, Ali Riley

UPDATE: In a heartfelt farewell, Angel City FC honored legends Christen Press and Ali Riley during their last home game of the season against the Portland Thorns at BMO Stadium. Both players announced their retirement, marking an emotional end to their significant contributions to the club.
The local icons played their final match on October 29, 2024, following a tough 2-0 loss to Portland. Press, who has battled back from a severe ACL injury, was a standout figure, embodying the resilience and spirit of Angel City. She expressed gratitude to the fans, saying, “Thank you for making me feel like the most loved player in the whole world.”
The ceremony was poignant, with Angel City president and co-founder Julie Uhrman highlighting Press’s legacy: “Our history starts with you.” Press was acquired as the club’s first-ever player, setting a precedent for future generations. Meanwhile, Riley, who returned to the club as its inaugural captain, reflected on her journey and thanked fans for their unwavering support.
Both players were recognized postgame, with the Thorns remaining on the field to pay their respects. Riley, who faced a nerve issue that sidelined her for most of the season, returned in the 82nd minute, receiving the captain’s armband in a touching tribute.
Earlier in the day, Angel City’s playoff aspirations took a significant hit with Racing Louisville FC drawing 2-2 against Gotham FC, leaving the team in a precarious position. The club will finish the regular season on November 2 against the Chicago Stars, but the emotional weight of the day overshadowed the game.
As Angel City FC prepares to close this chapter, fans and players alike celebrate the indelible mark left by Press and Riley. “It’s always been about the people to me,” Riley said, emphasizing the community that embraced her return. Their legacies will continue to inspire the next generation of athletes.
Stay tuned for further updates as the team navigates the closing of this season and the future ahead.
