Battle Mountain Basketball Teams Split, Eagle Valley Boys Surge to 5-1

URGENT UPDATE: The Battle Mountain basketball teams have both begun the 2025-2026 season with a 2-2 record, following a thrilling victory for the girls and a tough loss for the boys. Earlier today, the girls rallied from a 9-point halftime deficit to defeat Soroco 39-36, thanks to standout performances from Ruthie Casey, who scored 15 points, and teammates Amelia Wansley and Kate Kovacik, each contributing 10 points.

Meanwhile, the boys’ team faced a challenging match against Rifle, losing 45-37 last night in Edwards. Izzy Kovacik led the scoring for the Huskies with 17 points, while Casey added 16 points. As the season progresses, Casey is averaging 12.3 points per game.

The boys’ team opened the season with a 76-50 loss to Coal Ridge but bounced back with victories over Lake County 60-47 and DSST: Cedar 58-47. However, they suffered another setback against Rifle, leaving them at 2-2 as they prepare to face Middle Park at home on Thursday night.

In other local basketball news, the Eagle Valley boys team is hot off the press, boasting a remarkable 5-1 record. After clinching three consecutive victories at the start of the season, the Devils stumbled against Rampart 71-44 on December 11 but quickly regained momentum with a dominant performance against Caprock Academy, where sophomore Daniel Anderson scored 19 points.

The Eagle Valley girls, however, are currently at 2-4, despite an impressive start with a 44-22 win over Weld Central. They secured another victory against Steamboat Springs 34-14 on Saturday. Freshman Hannah Miano and senior Ella Webster are leading the way, averaging 11.7 and 10.2 points per game respectively. They will be back in action against Grand Junction on Wednesday night and Moffat County on Thursday.

The Eagle Valley girls wrestling team has also made headlines, recently ranked 6th in 4A following strong performances in early-season tournaments. Julia Borejszo led the charge with a win at 140 pounds at Soroco on December 6, while Luvlyn Ward secured third place at 115 pounds. The team continues to build momentum as they approach the next set of competitions.
