Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood Wins 2025 Leadership Award

BREAKING: Bemidji Fire Chief Justin Sherwood has been awarded the 2025 Leadership Award by the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association (MSFCA) during its annual conference in Duluth, held from October 15-18, 2023. This prestigious recognition highlights Sherwood’s exceptional contributions and advocacy for the fire service, making a significant impact on both local and state levels.

During the award ceremony, MSFCA President Eric Bullen praised Sherwood for his unwavering commitment to enhancing the fire service. “Under his guidance, the Bemidji Fire Department has experienced remarkable growth in capacity, morale, and readiness,” Bullen stated. His leadership fosters a culture of accountability and community partnership, aligning perfectly with the award’s criteria of innovation and major contributions.

Chief Sherwood has been at the helm of the Bemidji Fire Department since 2021, following a dedicated career that began in 2002 as a residential dorm firefighter. His proactive approach to leadership was especially evident during the devastating storm that struck on June 21, where he swiftly mobilized resources and coordinated efforts to assist the community.

Bullen highlighted Sherwood’s efforts in the storm’s aftermath, noting, “Realizing the magnitude of the situation, Chief Sherwood activated the Intrastate Mutual Aid Plan, bringing in resources from across the state to support his team.” This decisive action allowed his staff to manage their personal property losses while ensuring the safety of the community.

Earlier this year, Sherwood further demonstrated his commitment by securing a scholarship to attend the Congressional Fire Services Institute Symposium in Washington, D.C., advocating for fire service interests at a national level. Bullen remarked on Sherwood’s seamless integration with the legislative committee, where he advocated with extensive knowledge for the needs of greater Minnesota.

The Bemidji Fire Department expressed pride in having such an exemplary leader. “When our chief leads well, our entire community benefits,” the department stated in a Facebook post announcing the award. Sherwood’s leadership not only uplifts his team but also ensures the safety and well-being of the entire Bemidji community.

As the fire service landscape continues to evolve, Sherwood’s recognition serves as an inspiration for fire chiefs and departments across the state. The Bemidji Fire Department’s commitment to excellence under his leadership is a testament to the positive impact that dedicated service can have on communities.

This award is not just a personal achievement for Sherwood; it reinforces the importance of strong leadership in public safety and the vital role that fire departments play in community resilience. As the Bemidji community celebrates this honor, all eyes are on the future of fire service leadership in Minnesota.
