Bemidji State’s Monster Mash Beaver Bash Draws 300+ Trick-or-Treaters

UPDATE: Bemidji State University’s inaugural Monster Mash Beaver Bash was a major hit as over 300 trick-or-treaters flooded the John Glas Fieldhouse on October 31, 2023. This Halloween-themed event, designed to replace traditional trick-or-treating at residence halls, ensured families could enjoy festivities in one convenient location amid rainy weather.

The atmosphere was electric as families arrived early, with many lining up 15 to 30 minutes before the doors opened. “The energy level has been really high,” said Jonathan Dietz, director of Housing and Residential Life. “I’d say this has been a large success.”

This year’s Monster Mash was organized to provide a safe and accessible environment, allowing parents to avoid dark and chilly walks across campus. Attendees enjoyed a variety of activities manned by around a dozen student organizations, offering games and an abundance of candy.

As the event unfolded, students and resident assistants Shelby Thyssen and Emma Ostrowski reported greeting more than 300 kids within just the first 30 minutes. “It’s really exciting to see so many kids enjoying themselves,” Thyssen noted.

Dietz praised the significant participation from students, stating, “About 90% of those helping tonight are non-staff, showcasing strong student engagement.” Various clubs, including the Communications Honor Society and the Outdoor Team, contributed to the event’s activities, which included pumpkin tic-tac-toe, giant Jenga, and bowling.

Adding to the festive spirit, Bucky the Beaver made a special appearance, engaging with children and posing for photos in their costumes. “It’s so fun to see our student community come out and really connect with folks,” Dietz expressed. “We appreciate all the help from staff and residents.”

With such a positive turnout and enthusiastic participation, the Monster Mash Beaver Bash is set to become a beloved tradition at Bemidji State, blending fun, community spirit, and Halloween excitement into one unforgettable night.
