Cal Hires Michael Hutchings as New Defensive Coordinator NOW

BREAKING: The University of California, Berkeley has just announced the hiring of Michael Hutchings as their new defensive coordinator. This urgent development comes as head coach Tosh Lupoi continues to build his staff, with Hutchings, a former teammate at De La Salle High, bringing significant coaching experience to the Bears.

Hutchings has spent the past two seasons as the safeties coach for the Minnesota Vikings, where he played a crucial role in the team’s defense, which allowed just 292.7 yards per game this season—ranking fifth in the NFL. With eight years of coaching under his belt since finishing his playing career at USC in 2016, Hutchings is poised to make an immediate impact at Cal.

“I’m excited to welcome Michael to our coaching staff,” said Lupoi. “His defensive acumen and proven track record will elevate our program.” Hutchings has previously coached at USC (2018-20), Oregon (2021), and Western Kentucky (2022), where he developed standout players including Talanoa Hufanga, now with the 49ers.

In addition to Hutchings, Cal has also brought on Da’Von Brown from Western Kentucky to serve as the defensive backs coach and co-defensive coordinator. Brown, who held the position of co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Western Kentucky this past season, was instrumental in mentoring several All-Conference USA players, including current 49ers rookie Upton Stout.

This dual hiring underscores Cal’s commitment to strengthening its defense as they prepare for the upcoming season. With both Hutchings and Brown on board, the Bears aim to enhance their performance and competitiveness in the Pac-12.

Fans and supporters are eagerly awaiting the changes these new hires will bring to Cal’s football program. The urgency to improve defensive strategies is palpable, and with Hutchings’ successful background, expectations are high.

The Bears will look to make significant strides in their upcoming season, and these pivotal coaching appointments signal a new era for Cal football. Stay tuned for more updates as this story develops.
