Caleb Williams Honors Coach Ben Johnson with High School Jersey

In a heartfelt gesture, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams donned a replica of his coach’s high school jersey during the season finale against the Detroit Lions on December 31, 2023. The jersey, which featured the colors green and yellow, celebrated the legacy of Ben Johnson, who wore the number 12 while playing for the A.C. Reynolds High School Rockets in Ashville, North Carolina.

Johnson, recognized as an all-conference player during his junior and senior years, also earned the title of conference player of the year in his final season. Academically, he ranked among the top five students in his class, showcasing his talents both on and off the field. Reflecting on his high school experience, Johnson stated, “We were a darn good high school team, and probably about 25 or 30 years there, it wasn’t whether we’re gonna go to the playoffs, it was how far we’re gonna make it in the playoffs.”

Legacy and Inspiration

The significance of the jersey goes beyond mere nostalgia; it symbolizes the bond Johnson shares with his players and his roots in the sport. Johnson spent much of his childhood in the locker room, influenced by his father, who served as an assistant coach. He recalled the “Good, Better, Best” cheer that has become a hallmark of the team’s celebrations after victories, a tradition that has its origins in his high school days.

Williams’ choice to wear the jersey is also indicative of a larger team culture that values mentorship and legacy. As the Bears concluded their season, they aimed to foster a sense of unity and respect for their coach’s journey. “It’s just a fond memory of mine growing up,” Johnson added, highlighting the lasting impact of those formative years on his coaching philosophy.

As the Bears prepare for the next season, Williams’ tribute serves as a reminder of the importance of connection, history, and the shared experiences that shape athletes and coaches alike.
