Camden Hills Wins First State Football Championship in History

UPDATE: Camden Hills has made history by clinching its first-ever state football championship with a stunning 52-26 victory over Spruce Mountain on November 15, 2023, at Edward Little High School. The Windjammers, led by quarterback Hollis Schwalm, showcased a dominant performance that will be remembered for years to come.

Just days before the championship, the team found extra motivation when new banners were hung in their gym, highlighting their sports achievements. “Football was up there with no dates on it. So I looked around and said ‘That needs to change,’” Schwalm stated. And change it did, as Schwalm delivered an offensive clinic, rushing for three touchdowns and passing for another.

Camden Hills, now boasting a record of 10-1, capitalized on five turnovers by the Spruce Mountain defense. The Windjammers took control early, leading 8-0 after the first quarter and establishing a commanding 32-12 lead at halftime. Coach Chris Christie praised his team, saying, “We played with utter heart, grit and determination today.”

The game featured electrifying plays, including a remarkable 67-yard touchdown run by Schwalm, who accounted for an astonishing 32 points for his team. The Windjammers continued their offensive onslaught in the second half with additional touchdowns from Braden Beveridge, Ethan Dingle, and Ben Hoffman, cementing their victory.

Beveridge, who scored and intercepted two passes, expressed the emotional significance of the win: “This is the stuff you dream about since you’re six years old watching a high school football game. It’s amazing.” The triumph is particularly poignant as Camden Hills has evolved from a fledgling program, only becoming a full-fledged varsity team in 2009, and facing challenges along the way.

In their playoff run, Camden Hills outscored opponents 134-26, proving their dominance leading up to the championship. Earlier in the playoffs, they defeated No. 4 Waterville 47-0 and No. 2 Mount Desert Island 35-0. Meanwhile, Spruce Mountain concluded their season with an 8-2 record, having also showcased impressive performances in their playoff journey.

As the final whistle blew, Camden Hills players celebrated on the field, marking a historic moment for their school. “We came in here confident. Our coaches knew what to do; we were just ready,” said Batty. The Windjammers can now proudly add their name to that once-empty banner in the gym, forever remembered as the first state football champions.

The future looks bright for Camden Hills football, with many young players contributing significantly to this victory. Coach Christie noted, “We checked our egos and really just started playing together as a team. I’m excited about the future.”

This historic win not only elevates the status of Camden Hills but also serves as an inspiration to future teams. As they return to school, the Windjammers carry with them the pride of being state champions, a title they fought valiantly to achieve.
