CC Sabathia Honored with Key to Vallejo on CC Sabathia Day

UPDATE: CC Sabathia, the newly inducted Major League Baseball Hall of Famer, received a hero’s welcome in his hometown of Vallejo, California, on July 30, 2023. The city honored him and his wife, Amber Sabathia, with the key to the city and proclaimed the day as “CC Sabathia Day” in recognition of their significant contributions to the community.

As rain held off during the event, Vallejo celebrated its native son, who became the first Vallejo athlete inducted into the Hall of Fame just a few months prior. In a heartwarming gesture, the city renamed Gateway Drive to “CC Sabathia Way”, marking a permanent tribute to his legacy.

During the ceremony, Sabathia reflected on his journey, expressing deep gratitude for the community that shaped him. “I think about the impact [Demetrius Davis] had on the community, and I’m just trying to be like him,” Sabathia said, fighting back tears while honoring his late mentor. “I appreciate you guys and love you.”

Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce praised Sabathia, saying, “When I travel outside of the city, people ask me to describe Vallejo. I should say it’s the story of CC Sabathia—heart, grit, and pride.” The event drew former coaches, friends, and local dignitaries who shared heartfelt stories and gratitude for the couple’s unwavering support of Vallejo.

John Stevens, Sabathia’s former football coach, described him as a “coach’s dream,” while Vallejo High Athletic Director Josh Ramos emphasized Sabathia’s lasting impact, stating, “Thirty years of student body and alumni proudly hold his legacy as their own.”

The celebration also included a free baseball clinic for local children, highlighting the Sabathias’ commitment to nurturing future generations through their PitCCh-In Foundation. Each year, the foundation supports Vallejo students with backpack giveaways and baseball camps, emphasizing the couple’s dedication to education and community service.

In July, Sabathia was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, concluding a remarkable career that boasts 251 wins and over 3,000 strikeouts. His legacy extends beyond the diamond, with a focus on community welfare through his foundation’s initiatives.

As the event concluded, Sabathia expressed his joy in returning to Vallejo, saying, “I always go back to my house in the crest. My aunt usually cooks for me.”

This emotional tribute not only celebrates CC Sabathia’s sports achievements but also his profound impact on Vallejo, a city proud to call him its own. With a legacy firmly rooted in community service and support for youth, Sabathia’s story continues to inspire many.
