UPDATE: Chester has honored its own today with the unveiling of a statue dedicated to Fredia “The Cheetah” Gibbs, a local hero and the first African American woman to win a world kickboxing title. The ceremony took place on November 6, 2023, at the park across from Chester City Hall on East Fourth Street and Avenue of the States.
This monumental statue, sculpted by Jennifer Frudakis-Petry and cast by Laran Bronze, stands as a powerful testament to Gibbs’ inspiring journey in martial arts, which spanned over three decades and includes titles from ISKA, WKA, and WCK. Chester Mayor Stefan Roots emphasized the significance of her accomplishments, stating, “Her story is the story of Chester itself, a story of grit, perseverance, and pride.”
Gibbs, often referred to as “The Most Dangerous Woman in the World,” has become an icon of strength, serving as an inspiration for women everywhere. “This statue stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration for everyone who walks past it,” Roots added, highlighting her continuing impact on the community.
The statue was originally unveiled at Cabrini University in 2022, where Gibbs made her mark as an All-American basketball player. Following the closure of the university, Villanova University transferred ownership of the statue to the city of Chester, cementing her legacy in her hometown.
During the emotional unveiling, Gibbs expressed her gratitude, stating, “To stand here today, back here where it all began right here in Chester, it means everything to me.” She reflected on her journey from a girl with big dreams to a world champion, saying, “This statue doesn’t just represent me; it represents us, it represents Chester, the heart, the fight, the resilience.” Holding back tears, she added, “Chester is my story … Thank you, Chester, I love you.”
