Commanders QB Jayden Daniels Undergoes MRI for Hamstring Injury
URGENT UPDATE: Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels is set to undergo an MRI on Monday following a concerning hamstring injury sustained during Washington’s 44-22 defeat against the Dallas Cowboys. The injury occurred in the third quarter when Daniels’ right leg twisted awkwardly as he was sacked, leading to a fumble.
In a post-game briefing, Commanders coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Daniels felt a strain in his hamstring just moments before exiting the game. “I just don’t want to say one way or another, and not give the accurate info on that,” Quinn stated, addressing the planned MRI for the second-year QB. The injury adds to the Commanders’ woes, as they were already without their top three receivers during the game.
After the awkward sack by rookie linebacker Shemar James, Daniels was seen gingerly walking to the sideline before heading into the medical tent. He later jogged through the bench area but was subsequently seen heading into the tunnel towards the locker room, with Washington trailing 27-15.
“He definitely wanted back in,” Quinn noted, highlighting Daniels’ determination despite the injury. The Cowboys capitalized on the fumble, scoring a touchdown on a 5-yard pass from quarterback Dak Prescott to tight end Jake Ferguson, extending their lead to 34-15.
Daniels had completed 12 of 22 passes for 156 yards and one touchdown before his injury. His performance this season has been notable, with 1,031 yards, 8 touchdowns, and just one interception over five games. However, he has missed two games earlier this season due to a left knee injury, which saw the team go 1-1 under backup quarterback Marcus Mariota.
After Daniels’ exit, Mariota stepped in, completing 4 of 10 passes for 63 yards but also throwing an interception, which DaRon Bland returned 68 yards for another Cowboys touchdown, further widening the gap at 41-15.
“It’s tough. He’s been battling all year, and I know that can be very frustrating,” Mariota remarked about Daniels’ ongoing injury challenges. The Commanders now face significant uncertainty as they look ahead to their next games, hoping for a speedy recovery for their starting quarterback.
The upcoming MRI results will be critical in determining Daniels’ availability moving forward as the Commanders aim to rebound from this loss and stay competitive in their season.
