UPDATE: Chanukah celebrations in Mobile, Alabama, are set to kick off with a vital community initiative. Chabad of Mobile has announced two major events, starting in just two weeks, aimed at gathering canned goods for Feeding the Gulf Coast. This urgent food drive is designed to help feed families in need throughout the region.
The celebrations will feature a ceremonial Menorah Lighting with the participation of Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis, making it a significant local gathering. The community is encouraged to donate canned food items, which will be used to construct a giant menorah – aptly named the CAN-NORAH. All donations will be given to Feeding the Gulf Coast to support those facing food insecurity.
“As we approach Chanukah, we invite everyone to join us in this meaningful project,” said a spokesperson from Chabad of Mobile. “Together, we can brighten the lives of many who are struggling.”
Starting today, residents have three weeks to contribute. Cans can be dropped off at Chabad, or monetary donations can be made towards purchasing canned goods. The menorah will be lit at the community events, symbolizing hope and unity during the holiday season.
This initiative not only celebrates the spirit of Chanukah but also addresses an urgent need within the Mobile/Baldwin area. As the holiday approaches, the community’s involvement is crucial to ensure that no family goes hungry.
Attendees at the events will witness the impact of their generosity firsthand, as the finished menorah, crafted from donated cans, is lit to mark the beginning of Chanukah. Following the festivities, all collected items will be forwarded to the food bank for distribution.
The two events will take place on December 10 and December 17, 2023. Community members are urged to mark their calendars and participate in this noble cause.
Stay tuned for further updates on this inspiring initiative as more details are revealed. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that the light of Chanukah shines brightly for everyone.
