Community Mourns Loss of Jim Early, 87, Devoted Educator and Volunteer

UPDATE: The community of Waterford is in mourning following the peaceful passing of James Donald “Jim” Early, age 87, on December 18, 2025. Known for his unwavering dedication to education and community service, Jim’s legacy will impact countless lives.

Jim, who was born on July 3, celebrated his birthday alongside the nation’s Independence Day, creating a unique bond with his family and friends. He leaves behind a loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, as well as four daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early. Tragically, his daughter, Mary Ellen Early, preceded him in death on June 26, 2025.

Throughout his life, Jim was a passionate educator, serving as a Guidance Counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls before joining Hudson Valley Community College in 1967. His career shaped the futures of countless students until his retirement in December 1999. Following his retirement, he served as Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade, exemplifying his commitment to community service.

Jim’s contributions extended beyond the classroom. A member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years, he dedicated himself to the safety and well-being of his community. His love for music also shone through as a talented pipe organist, most recently at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy.

The community will gather to pay their respects during a funeral service on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home in Waterford, followed by a mass at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, ensuring Jim’s memory remains close to home.

Jim’s family encourages those wishing to honor his memory to consider donations to the Hospice Community in Rensselaer or the Waterford Fire Department.

As tributes pour in, Jim Early will be remembered not only as a devoted father and grandfather but also as a figure of kindness, friendship, and service to his community. His impact is felt deeply by all who knew him, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
